Annually more than 725.000 animals are used in Belgium for laboratory testing. On a European level this makes Belgium one of the main offenders with regards to the amount of laboratory animals used per person. The Coalition against Animal Testing is not against scientific research but feels this should be conducted in an ethical manner using
reliable modern techniques. We therefore demand abolition of all animal testing within the short term and an immediate ban on experiments with non-human primates.
In Belgium, the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (K.U. Leuven), together with its francophone counterpart Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL), is the biggest user of monkeys for research. In the Gasthuisberg laboratory of the K.U. Leuven monkeys are being used in outdated and unreliable tests. The primates that are held captive here are used in neurological research which continues for several years. Ultimately, at the end of the experiments, the monkeys are killed.
Such is the saddening fate of most laboratory animals.
On Saturday April 17, 2010 we will peacefully protest against the use of animals in experiments and demand an immediate ban on primate experiments in Belgian vivisection laboratories. Together we can write history and kick monkey experiments out of Belgium!
